You told a coworker you had been living in Houston for three years. She heard leaving. She nodded, said something polite, and the conversation moved on, and you will never find out that it happened.
That is the expensive version of the ship-and-sheep problem, and it is the version nobody warns Spanish speakers about. The cheap version is the one everybody jokes about, asking a hotel front desk for clean sheets and watching a face change. Both come from the same place in your mouth, and both survive the standard fix, because the standard fix is broken. You were told to hold the long vowel longer. English teaches that rule with the word sheep, and sheep happens to be one of the words where English clips that long vowel hardest.
Your mistake has a direction
Spanish hands you five vowels and asks nothing else of you: sí, pesa, pan, luna, azul. That is the whole system, and it has nothing like English's pervasive reduction of unstressed vowels to schwa (Spanish phonology, following Hualde's The Sounds of Spanish). American English wants about thirteen stressed vowel sounds filed into those five slots (American English Phonetics, University of Groningen). Two into one. Something has to give.
What gives is predictable. In studies using American and English dialects, Spanish listeners file tokens of both English vowels under one Spanish category. Geoffrey Morrison's review of the literature puts it flatly: L1-Spanish listeners assimilate "most tokens of both the English /i/ category and the English /ɪ/ category to a single Spanish vowel category, Spanish /i/" (Morrison 2009, Language and Speech).
Spanish /i/ is the attractor. So ship comes out as "sheep," fill comes out as "feel," live comes out as "leave." You are not making two mistakes. You are making one correct Spanish sound in a slot where English wanted a sloppier one.
That is better news than it sounds. There is one new sound to learn, and it is a looser version of a vowel you already own. (Morrison notes that Scottish English splits the two vowels far enough apart that Spanish listeners handle them differently, so if your daily input is Glasgow, your mileage differs.)
The word this rule is taught with is the word it can't work on
The vowel in bead is about twice as long as the vowel in beat, and the only thing separating those two words is the final consonant. English clips its own vowels, hard. Any vowel sitting before a voiceless consonant in the same syllable gets shortened, a process phoneticians call pre-fortis clipping, a term the UCL phonetician John Wells had a hand in coining (Groningen, §6.6).
Now look at the word you have been drilling. Sheep ends in /p/. Beach ends in /tʃ/. Seat, feet, cheap, keep, all voiceless, all clipped. The most common teaching pair in English pronunciation puts the long vowel in the one environment where English squeezes it shortest.
Wells put the distinction in a sentence worth taping to a mirror: "A 'shortened' /iː/, as in reach, is not the same as 'short' /ɪ/, as in rich" (John Wells's phonetic blog).
You can watch the length cue disappear in a dictionary. Cambridge writes British sheep as /ʃiːp/ with the length mark, and American sheep as /ʃip/ without it. Same for pool: /puːl/ in the UK column, /pul/ in the US one. The dictionary is telling you that in American English, quality carries the contrast and length is along for the ride.
Morrison points at the classroom. One proposal in the literature, he writes, is that learners use duration "because they are taught that /i/ is 'long' and /ɪ/ is 'short'." He does not let that explanation stand alone, since a learner pointed at duration still has to account for why the difference in quality never registers. But the teaching is at minimum an accomplice.
To be fair to length: it does real work in some words. Living and leaving both have a /v/, which is voiced, so neither vowel gets clipped and the duration gap between them is genuinely wide. It is the voiceless-final words (sheet, beach, seat, cheap) where clipping squeezes both vowels, the gap between them compresses, and your tongue has to do most of the job alone.
Sheep and ship: unclench, don't shorten
Sheep is a tense vowel: tongue high and forward, lips spread, and in American English the tongue keeps gliding upward while you say it. Ship is lax, and lax vowels in English tend to be centralized, "pronounced closer to /ə/ than tense vowels" (Groningen, §6.2). The target for ship is a vowel that has gone slack and drifted toward the middle of your mouth.
Watch your lips in a mirror. Say sheep, then ship. Your mouth should visibly loosen on the second one, and if it doesn't, you have said sheep with a different consonant on the end.
Pairs worth owning: sheep/ship, leave/live, feel/fill, seat/sit, reach/rich, green/grin, deep/dip. Korean speakers hit the same wall from a different direction, which is a decent reminder that this is a property of English, not a defect in Spanish.
Pool and pull: the one place "keep it back" is still true
The vowel in too, do, soon and noon has been drifting forward in American mouths for decades. The Atlas of North American English measured more than 7,000 vowels from across the continent and found this one has moved off its old back position toward the middle of the mouth, most of all after /t/, /d/, /s/ and /n/ (ANAE, ch. 12). So the old advice to push it further back moves a US-based learner away from the accent around them.
The exception is the words in this pair. The Atlas is explicit about it: "in most dialects, the vowels of tool, school, etc. occupy high back position while all other /uw/ vowels are shifted well to the center or front" (ANAE, ch. 12). Pool, fool and tool all sit before /l/, so keep the vowel back in those. Let it drift forward in soon and noon.
Watch your lip rounding instead of your tongue. Pool pushes your lips forward into a tight circle. Pull barely moves them.
There is less to drill here than you would expect, because the lax vowel of pull turns up in very few English words. Pool/pull, fool/full, Luke/look, suit/soot, who'd/hood, and you have nearly exhausted the list.
One pair to leave alone for now: bat and bet. It gets bundled with these two constantly, and it does not belong. In the Groningen tense/lax table, /æ/ and /ɛ/ are both listed as lax vowels, so there is no tense-lax setting to adjust here. There is no tense-lax length component either, and the small length difference that does exist runs the wrong way: /æ/ is the longer of the two. That contrast is jaw height. It needs its own drill, and borrowing the sheep/ship fix will not do anything for it.

A learner on italki wrote that shit against sheet, beach against bitch and bird against beard "annoy the hell out of me." Those are the words that get all the attention, and they earn it, because the failure is loud and immediate and you find out in the room.
The expensive misses are quieter. "I've been living here three years" heard as leaving, where both sentences are grammatical, both fit the conversation, and the other person has no reason to ask. "Can you pull it?" heard as pool it on a job site. "Did you fill it?" heard as feel it over a phone with bad reception. Nobody laughs, nobody corrects you, and the misunderstanding just sits there. Those are the ones worth drilling.
Fix the ear before the mouth
Kondaurova and Francis played tense and lax vowels to English, Spanish and Russian listeners. The English listeners went mostly by vowel quality. The Spanish and Russian listeners relied "entirely on duration" (Kondaurova & Francis 2008, JASA). You can hear a difference. You are listening to the wrong part of it.
Spanish has no phonemic vowel length, so duration was never load-bearing information in your first language, and English pedagogy handed you a rule that made it load-bearing anyway. This is why mouth drills alone tend to stall. All of the research above is about perception, and the cue you are weighting wrong is the part that has to move first.
The test that matters is a rigged one. Have someone read you ten words at random from seat, sit, feet, fit, cheap, chip, and write down what you hear. Voiceless endings only, on purpose, because clipping squeezes both vowels there and leaves you far less duration to lean on. If you score near five out of ten there, no amount of mirror work will move you until you have spent a couple of weeks just listening. Ninety seconds, three lines
Mirror in front of you. Ten repetitions each, one thing to watch per line.
- "This ship's sheep." Watch your lips: loose, then spread.
- "Pull the full pool." Watch the rounding: flat, flat, forward.
- "I'm living here, not leaving here." The one line where length is a fair cue, because both /v/ sounds are voiced and neither vowel gets clipped.
Then move to voiceless-final words deliberately: seat, beach, keep, cheap, feet. Those are the words where the cue you have leaned on for years is squeezed thinnest, so they are the honest test of whether the new setting has taken.
The habit outlives the lesson
I know people who have worked in English for twenty years and still merge these two vowels the moment they are tired or talking fast. Nothing in daily life forces the change, because the context usually rescues the sentence, and a mistake that never gets corrected never gets unlearned. If the phantom e in eschool and espain is on your list too, that one has a mechanical fix.
So here is tomorrow's test, and it goes back to where this started. Ask someone to say "I'm leaving here" and "I'm living here" in whichever order they like, without telling you which is which. Miss it twice and you have found the vowel to go loosen.
